Today, as far as I am concerned, begins "spooky season." I am not sure how I feel about that phrase, spooky season. It just sounds like something Martha Stewart would say, and it is more on the side of cutesy than frightening, but I'll try not to complain!
We are in full swing around here setting up our Halloween/Samhain decorations. Thinking about the most wonderful time of the year for most of the year and then it finally arriving is mixed with excitement and a stark reminder to slow down and enjoy it. With as busy as I can get during this time, the second part is often hard to do, especially when life continues on all around with normal responsibilities and whatnot.
Breathe, just breathe and smell the mugwort, Harvest Master!
Today is September 1st, 2026, and I just released the play-test of Samhain: Hearth & Horror to The 13th Circle tier on Patreon. That is a pretty big milestone for the development of the game. Getting it into the hands of the people that are big fans of Agranak Studios is met with trepidation and curiosity. Trepidation because I am exposing myself to judgement. Curiosity because I want to know if this is just a game I've created for myself or if others will find value in it. More than that, people may be closer to finding a game that is exactly what they've been looking for.
Wouldn't that be nice.

I have no delusions of grandeur. I have put my hat into an arguably oversaturated market of indie TTRPGs. That is a business perspective, and though that is interesting to note, that's not why I'm doing it. I really just want a game I can personally feel comfortable playing that gives me those wonderful autumn vibes each time I pick it up to play. Having play-tested the game myself, I'd say it's pretty damn close.
What I've landed on is not revolutionary by any stretch, it's a d20 system after all. I wanted ease of entry, and I think the d20 system is perfect for what I am wanting to accomplish. The underrated d6 is also prominent in the system, and I like that. Also, d66 tables are frickin' awesome!!!
Getting rid of the need for the other dice that typically come in a 7-die polyhedral set feels right for what I want. Rules-Lite with meaningful mechanical choices for the players to influence the game. That's what I want.
I can't wait for the feedback from The 13th Circle. Also, in the coming weeks I will open up the play-test to more and more tiers on Patreon so others can get their digital hands on the documents and experience the Samhain Vale at their own tables.
Here's to the "spooky season" and all things pumpkin spice, comfort, and chilling atmospheres!
