A perpetual autumn campaign setting for old-school fantasy roleplaying.

Welcome to By Candlelight

Welcome to, By Candlelight!

Periodically I will be posting my musings, campaign setting development, frustrations, and game design here. This will be more of a journaling of my processes of creating, Samhain Hearth & Horror. It has already been a long process as I started this project back in the stone ages, in 2020. I still have a long way to go, but as I've been reminded lately, "It's okay to be a slow creator". Not sure if it is slow as I am one guy doing all the main things. I think it will get done when it gets done and there are many stages to the process.

  • Initial development (so many ideas)
  • Focus, refocus and focus again
  • Text writing, rewriting, refining
  • Layout and design (most do this last, for me it is part of my artistic process)
  • Play testing
  • Re-rewriting, refine some more
  • Step back look at it. Find it needs more trimming and refining.
  • Refine some more
  • KEEP GOING!

This is a labor of love first and foremost. To create a game and setting that is tailor made for me. And as many of you know, it's hard to find that right game or setting let alone both. Now some just nail it right out of the gate. They've been playing AD&D 1e with Greyhawk since day 1. That is a beautiful thing, truly it is. I am a tinkerer at heart and am hardly satisfied, just one more tweak is my mantra it seems.

At any rate, these are ramblings. I am hoping that this will be sort of an artifact of my progress from this point forward into my development of the Samhain Campaign setting. As well, if you are interested in a Halloween inspired campaign setting for table top role playing, then a hardy welcome to the Samhain Vale is in order. For those just passing by, thank you!

Until next time, keep your lantern lit.
